INSURANCE

As forest therapy guides we spend our days immersed in nature and the more-than-human world, and the idea of managing a business may seem intimidating and out of place. Yet, we find ourselves, like many of those we guide, having to bridge these two worlds. As a forest therapy guide who is being paid to guide people on public or private land, you are legally viewed as an independent contractor and liable for the safety of the people you are guiding. To protect yourself, and to be able to guide on public or private lands, you'll need to have General Liability Insurance.

General Liability Insurance protects your business from third-party lawsuits alleging bodily injury or property damage. In the event of such a lawsuit, your General Liability policy can cover the cost of hiring an attorney to defend your business against those claims and can even pay damages or settlements for which your business is found responsible.

Public lands require proof of insurance before they will allow you to guide on their land and apply for permits, MOU's or other agreements. At the bottom are templates for model release, participant agreement, and liability release. Some public/private lands will request you use their release forms.
